Our district has been working toward earning the designation of a Purple Star School District. This recognition highlights a strong commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families, and the unique challenges they may face.
April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, and we look forward to celebrating and recognizing these students and families.
One event to mark your calendars for is the statewide “Purple Up” Day on April 22.
Lyndsey Borjas has designed a special shirt for the occasion and has invited us to share the order link. If you would like to purchase a shirt, you can do so here: https://purpleup26.itemorder.com/shop/home/
The order deadline is April 5, and shirts will be delivered to the school and sent home with students and staff. An image of the shirt is attached. Two dollars from each shirt sold will be donated to Ohio Military Kids, a nonprofit organization that provides programs and support for military-connected youth across the state.
If you have any questions or ideas, we would love to hear from you.

Environmental Science finished up our study of agriculture. In our final lab, students checked how soil salinization (from irrigation) can affect seed germination. We used soybeans placed in salinity conditions of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%. Then, students checked their soybeans for germination on day three. Class data indicated that seed germination is severely affected at salt levels above 1.5%.

On Thursday, our Spanish Honor Society hosted the Emanuel Concert. Emanuel is 17 years old and touring with his family from Argentina. The concert featured songs completely in Spanish! Five other schools also attended which created a crowd of 250 people. The concert celebrated Hispanic culture and the Spanish language. It created a great chance for students to practice their Spanish outside of the classroom and have fun! Luna Oslzweski sang a duet with him. By the end of the concert, he was given a Genoa basketball shirt as a thank you by Mr. Routson!

We are excited to welcome to David Clark and Bill Howard to the Genoa Area Local Schools Team!
Bill has joined the District in our open maintenance position. Over the past five years, he has worked in maintenance at a residential and senior living community in Sandusky, bringing valuable hands-on experience to our team.
David Clark is joining us in the newly created role of Director of Facilities and Operations, supporting the overall care and upkeep of our campus. He brings more than 25 years of experience in the field, including the last 16 years in maintenance and supervisory roles.
We are excited to welcome both individuals to the Comet Community and are confident their impact will be felt immediately.

Our elementary students had a wonderful opportunity to experience live opera right here at school!
We welcomed the talented resident artists from Toledo Opera for their Opera on Wheels performance of The Bear Who Couldn't Fish. Students were able to enjoy the storytelling, beautiful singing, and interactive moments throughout the show.
Experiences like this bring music to life in such a meaningful way, and we are so grateful to Toledo Opera for sharing their talents with our students!
A special thank you to Ottawa County Community Foundation for their generous grant, making the performance possible!

After finishing Chapters 6 & 7 of Lord of the Flies, Mrs. Curtis’ students took on a STEM challenge inspired by the “beast” on the island (aka a not-so-scary human in a parachute stuck in the trees).
Each tribe designed and built their own parachute, then tested them to see whose would float the longest. The tribe with the best float time won, but Mother Nature had her own plans! A few parachutes ended up stuck in the trees, creating some accidental “beasts” of our own.
Literature, engineering, and a little bit of unexpected chaos… just the way Golding would like it.

Friday morning, our middle school officially kicked off the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge, a statewide initiative championed by Ohio’s Lieutenant Governor, Jim Tressel. This program encourages students to set goals focused on fitness, nutrition, and mental well-being.
We were excited to welcome our challenge buddy, Jamal Luke, a member of the 2002 Ohio State National Championship Team. He shared an inspiring message about writing down goals, pushing beyond past accomplishments, and working each day to make yourself—and those around you—better.
We’re looking forward to seeing our students rise to the challenge and build healthy habits that last a lifetime!

Students in Mrs. Kaczynski's 9th grade English class are reading To Kill a Mockingbird. The upcoming chapters relate to the theme of conformity. Students were put into peer groups and asked to work together to vote on how they would react to specific scenarios (being a bystander, reacting to rumors, following the crowd, etc.). At the end of voting, students answered discussion questions relating to each scenario; it led to great classroom discussions that will relate well to the reading!

Let’s get ready for a great start to the school year! 🎉

Our students in ELA II were deep into Lord of the Flies, and they recently tackled a “tribe challenge” inspired by the novel! 🌴
After reading about the boys attempting to build shelters, each class had to design and construct their own hut using only a limited set of supplies — including a Styrofoam plate, toothpicks, straws, pretzel sticks, a fruit roll-up, construction paper, and 12 inches of tape.
The results? Lots of creativity, teamwork, and problem solving!

🔹 Luke Clement (29–5) battled back from a season-ending foot injury to qualify for state, finishing just one win shy of placing and ending his career with 126 wins and two NBC titles.

Mr. Strickland's CCP ENG 112 students explored the impact of community service in a hands-on way! After responding to thought-provoking questions, their answers were shared with classmates. Working in groups, students analyzed these peer “sources” and practiced synthesizing real data to build strong, evidence-based arguments.

The halls were loud Friday as we clapped out our State qualifiers! 🤼♂️👏
Best of luck to our Comets competing at the State Wrestling Tournament this weekend:

🔥 Tyler Abbey
🔥 Luke Clement
Your Genoa family is behind you all the way. Let’s go Comets! ☄️
