It is the season when inclement weather can have an impact on our athletic events. Remember you can call the high school and access extension 51 for the latest updates if weather is a factor.
Tickets for the boys sectional final game for Friday versus Evergreen will be on sale the rest of the week in the MS library. Cost is $4.00 for students and $6.00 for adults. All tickets at the gate will be $6.00
Genoa Matmen Make District Dent
For the second time in school history the Maroon and Grey were able to qualify 10 wrestlers to the District Wrestling Tournament. Genoa was one of 4 schools (Edison, Crestview, & Liberty Center ) to accomplish such a feat in the 44 team Northwest Division III District Wrestling Tournament. Only 11 other wrestling programs across the state of Ohio in Division III (172 Schools) advanced double digit district qualifiers. Junior Adam Klavinger (112) and Sophomore Jake Sheehy (171) earned district honors by placing 6th while senior Scott Traver (140) placed 5th earning a spot as an alternate to the State Wrestling Tournament. Despite coming up short on qualifying a wrestler to the State Tournament the Comets made a significant impact by each wrestler winning a district match as all 10 wrestlers progressed to the second day of competition. Genoa will return 8 District Qualifiers and two District Placers next season as they look to start their off-season this spring.

Derrick Vicars: Derrick is currently a sophomore on the University of Findlay's Men's Track Team. Derrick has broken UF's indoor shot put record with a throw of 57' 3". The toss has automatically qualified him for the Indoor National's in Albuquerque, New Mexico March 12th and 13th. He qualified for the division two national meet last year in that discus where he finished 14th in the country as a freshman. Chris Bassitt: Chris is currently a redshirt Sophomore on the Akron University Men's Baseball Team. Last season Bassitt earned a 1-2 record in 2008-09, registering the most saves on the team with seven on the year, ranking him second on the all-time UA single season list ahead of Dan Swallie (six, 2003)…In 23 appearances Bassitt’s ERA of 3.52 was second-lowest among active relievers…Bassitt logged 30.2 innings pitched on the season, firing an impressive 34 strikeouts on the year…Held opposing batters to a team-low .184 average, which ranked fifth among pitchers in the Mid-American Conference...Threw 16.2 innings (Apr. 4-May 10) of relief without allowing a run…Tossed 2.1 innings in 8-6 victory over Eastern Michigan (Apr. 4), picking up a pair of strikeouts to record first career win. Kurt Wolff: Curt is currently a Junior on the Notre Dame College Wrestling Team. As a Freshman Curt was 12-11, as a Sophomore this past season he was 21-12. Curt's team is currently ranked #1 in the nation. This past weekend Curt was runner-up at the RIT Tournament in Rochester, NY. Cory Hornyak: Cory recently transferred to Tiffin University from Youngstown State University where he was on the Varsity Baseball team. While at Youngstown State he played in 67 games, starting in 33 of those. He was an outfielder on that team and did some pitching as well. He had seven appearances on the mound. Blair Skilliter: Blair is currently a freshman on the #1 ranked division three football team Mount Union College Purple Raiders. Blair is a running back that is currently on the playoff roster and is seeing time. In Saturday's Quarter Final win over Albright Blair had five carries for 41 yards. Nick Purdue: Nick is on the Varsity Wrestling team at Ohio University. He is a redshirt sophomore and last season finished with a mark of 18-13, tied for the second-most wins on the team ... Compiled a 16-10 record at 174 pounds and went 2-3 at 184 ... Placed fourth at the MAC Championships at 174 ... Won first place in the freshman/sophomore division at the Michigan State Open ... Placed fifth at the Reno Tournament of Champions, going 6-2 ... Posted a 6-7 record in duals, including a 2-1 mark in league action ... Named Co-MAC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 23 ... Shana Szypka: Shana is presently a Junior on the University of Toledo Rocket Softball team. In 2009: Started 11 of the 19 games she appeared in on the mound…Led the team with a 3.93 ERA…Second among Rocket pitchers in total innings (82), complete games (4), and strikeouts (30)…Threw a complete game against Western Michigan, facing 28 batters and striking out four (4/4). In 2008: Appeared in 16 games on the mound and made seven starts... Posted a 6-3 record... Pitched 27 innings and struck out 27... Threw two complete games... Struck out a season-high six in her first appearance against Brown... Tossed six scoreless innings against Charleston Southern on March 1... Recorded six games with multiple strikeouts... Delaney Talmage: Delaney is currently a Junior at the University of Tiffin and is a second baseman/catcher for the Lady Dragons on the Varsity Softball team. Cody Katschke: Cody is currently a freshman at Owens Community College and is on the Men's Soccer Team. Cody played Defensive Midfielder this season for Coach Art Johnson. He started all 22 games and scored 2 goals. Owens placed 2nd in their conference and qualified to play in the Regional Tournament. Chelsa Nissen: is a sophmore on the Baldwin Wallace Volleyball Varsity Team. Chelsea is a two-year letterwinner and starter. She finished second on the team in 2009 with 158 kills,second on the team with 42 blocks in 2008. She had15 kills vs. Muskingum on Oct. 15, 2008, 23 digs at Muskingum on Oct. 24, 2009, andThree block solos vs. Centre (Ky.) on Sept. 20, 2008.
