Spring Notes

Written by Michael Vicars

3/21/12

Hello,

To say spring has sprung may be understated.  All of a sudden Summer is here.  Not necessarily on the calendar, but the temperatures certainly reflects it.  Warmer weather always brings challenges and one of those challenges is dress code.  As we approach spring break I thought I would review dress code items.

As the weather warms it is important to keep modesty in mind as our students dress for school.  It is important to remember the following are not permitted to be worn during the school day:

*sweatpants or gym shorts, bandanas, sweatbands, or sunglasses

*tank tops, shirts that expose midriff, or shirts with a low neckline, all shirts must have a sleeve

*students must wear shoes - no flip flops, or athletic sandals

*dress shorts must have at least a 5 inch inseam

*clothing that is "suggestive" in any way should not be worn to school

*Skirts that are worn need to be within 5" of the knee.  Wearing leggings or tights with a skirt does not change the 5" rule

When there is a question regarding dress code, those students are sent to me.  It is not an easy thing to deal with.  My personal rule on dealing with these situations is to deal with them with a mindset of  a "conservative approach".  That is, if they appear suggestive or to short, then we are probably going to ask the student to call home for some different clothing.  If there are multiple situations with the same student, then I have no choice but to enforce discipline.  That is something that I would like us to work together to avoid.

March Is Upon Us and Other Thoughts

Written by Michael Vicars

Good Day,

March is now here and with it the 3rd Quarter grading period is coming to a close quickly. The last day of the quarter is Friday March 9th and grade cards will be mailed home on March 16th.

This is the time of year in the Middle School that behavior can slip. Please remind your student that the school expects students to respect others and to do their very best. As an Assistant Principal the month's of February and March are frustrating because they are the highest discipline months every year.

Tardies and absences have been on the rise lately. Please remember when a student reaches 3 unexcused tardies in the quarter they have an extended day. If they reach 5 unexcused tardies it is a day in PASS.

Ipods and Phones in class and in the hallways have become a problem. Please remind students that these items must be kept in their lockers. If they have them out the teacher will bring them to me and the parent must come in and pick that item up. The last 2 weeks we have collected more of these than we have all year.
