Genoa: Division III State Tournament Champions

A record seven Genoa wrestlers advanced to Columbus this weekend at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of OSU.   A perfect 7-0 start would catapult the Comets to the top of the leader board after day one, leading the field of 167 teams by 2.5 points.  Genoa's Matmen would continue to increase their lead over runner up Ashtabula St. John by 6, 17 and then 37.5 points in consecutive rounds. Genoa would place a program best 6 wrestlers, all in the top three spots. Junior 132 pounder Dylan D'Emilio complete a perfect season at 52-0 and captured his third State championship as he decisioned Jacob Edwards of Troy Christian 7-0.  Junior three time state placer Julian Sanchez (48-3) earned state runner up honors at 120lbs falling just short of defeating 4x state placer Graham Shore of Miami East 3-4.  Oscar Sanchez(41-5) became a 2x state finalist after he defeated Caleb Edwards of Rootstown in the semifinals but slipped, in the smallest of margins, an overtime match to Ethan Turner of Troy Christian 2-3 to bring home a silver medal.  The Comets title run was sealed in the medal round on Saturday morning as Genoa's men of the mat would go a perfect 6 for 6 in matches wrestled.  Spearheading the drive was sophomore 138 pounder Dustin Morgillo (50-6) who defeated projected state champion Alex Isbrandt of Miami East to earn 3rd place honors.  Returning State Champion James Limongi overcame a debilitating foot injury to methodically work his way all the way back to 3rd place. Junior heavyweight wrestler Noah Koch (51-8) embodied the Cinderella story for the Comets; after dropping a quarter final match to the eventual State Champion Brian Sears of Williamsburg.  Koch, the lightest heavyweight in the bracket by more than 40 pounds, avenged two earlier season loses and defeated multiple higher ranked opponents to earn a bronze medal. The 2017-18 season would see the Comets capture the school's first & second Team State Championships in any sport (State Duals, State Tournament) while compiling a perfect 29-0 dual meet record.  Genoa seized their 6th consecutive NBC Championship and 4th straight Top Ten team finish at the State Tournament (2015 5th, 2016 6th, 2017 2nd).  Additionally Oscar Sanchez, Julian Sanchez, Dylan D’Emilio, Dustin Morgillo, and Xavier Beach each earned Individual Academic All-Ohio Honors. The Wrestling Team's average GPA of 3.4 collard Academic All-Ohio Honors for the matmen.  The future is bright for Genoa’s Men of the Mat as they will return 9 NBC Placers, 10 District Qualifiers, and 6 All-State Medalists.  Congrats on a spectacular season!  Go Comets!

Comet Matmen: State Dual Meet Champions!

State Champs

The stage was set. On Sunday February 11th Ohio’s elite 8 wrestling teams were set to square off at St. John’s Arena on the campus of OSU to determine the Division III State Champion.  The Genoa Wrestling Team paved the way for a historic weekend as they won 35 of 42 matches in route to winning the schools first team state championship in any sport. The Comets, who upended defending 2017 State Dual Champions Milan Edison in the regional semis in front of an electric home crowd, first downed 8th seeded Bethel-Tate 62-6 in the opening round of the state quarterfinals.  Next, in the state semifinals, the Comets defeated Versailles 50-9 by grinding out 12 consecutive bouts in a row. The Comets then matched up with defending 2017 Division III State Dual Runner-Up Massillon Tuslaw in the finals in front of a large contingent of Genoa faithful. Genoa’s Men of the Mat methodically chopped away at the Mustangs winning 9 of the 14 bouts overall and 6 via bonus points (Major Decision, Tech Fall, Pin). When all was said and done the Comets defeated Tuslaw 40-20, finishing the season undefeated in duals at a mark of 29-0 and claiming the Division III State Dual Championship. Oscar Sanchez, Devin D’Emilio, Julian Sanchez, Dylan D’Emillio, Dustin Morgillo, Kevin Contos, and James Limongi went a perfect 3-0 on the weekend.

Genoa will next compete at the OHSAA Sectional Tournament at Lake High School.  We would like to thank the outpouring of support from our community, school administration, staff & student body along with the many families who have rallied behind our wrestlers.  It has been a special moment in time that none of us will forget.
Go Comets!
