REJOICE! Genoa Area High School is again making musical theater history! We are thrilled to be the first public high school in Northwest Ohio to stage the glorious Broadway musical comedy Sister Act this coming March 23rd through 26th.

Sister Act is based on the 1992 hit film of the same name that starred Whoopie Goldberg. The story follows diva wanna-be Deloris Van Cartier (Marissa Pezzino) as her life takes a surprising turn after she witnesses a murder at the hands of her gangster boyfriend, Curtis Jackson (Aaron Conley) and then hides out in the last place anyone would think to look—a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior (Ana Rofkar), Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. Joining Deloris at the convent this March are 50+ talented high school thespians, who include: Macy Campbell (Sister Mary Robert), Annalisa Claus (Sister Mary Patrick), Olivia Shrewsbery (Sister Mary Lazarus), Skylar Jones (Sister Mary Martin-of-Tours) and Cameron Page (Sweaty Eddie).

Sister Act was written by Cheri Steinkellner and Bill Steinkellner (creators of the 80s sitcom Cheers!) featuring additional original music by Tony Award and 8-time Oscar Award winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid). Menken wanted to inspire his score off of 1970s music, specifically disco and gospel. As a result, the setting was changed from the original in the movie (Reno and San Francisco in the 1990s) to Philadelphia in the 1970s. In the transfer from the West End to Broadway, not only did Whoopie Goldberg herself jump on as as a producer, but the script underwent several revisions.

Sister Act opens Thursday, March 23 and runs through Sunday, March 26 with Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday's performance at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students/senior citizens and are available from any cast member or by calling Genoa Area Local Schools at 419-855-7741 ext. 21203 (High School Office) or ext. 41204 (Elementary School Office).

Congratulations to Annalisa Claus, Skylar Jones, Marissa Pezzino, Adeline Linker, Lydia White, Cameron Page and Austin Barrett, who, through an audition process, were selected to participate in the 2017 OMEA District 2 Honors Festival Choir.  They will be representing Genoa and join students from 25 other Northwest Ohio schools in a concert to be held at Port Clinton HS on Saturday, January 14th.  Great job students!
